Sunday, July 5th — and Japan and Puerto Rico could not stop playing each other. These two teams ran it back TWICE today, and both games delivered. In the opener, quickryceTTV went absolutely nuclear — 51 points and 10 assists for a double-double performance that has to be the line of the season. Japan won that one 101-87, with Haythumb of Puerto Rico doing everything he could to keep up, posting a double-double of his own with 26 points and 14 assists. But quickryceTTV was simply unstoppable. Then in the rematch, the script flipped — Puerto Rico won 85-73, with Haythumb bouncing back for 35 points and 9 assists, while baitedsteals of Japan hauled down a massive 22 rebounds for a double-double in a losing effort. One team wins each game. That's a rivalry, folks.
The other major storyline of the day? Mexico and Cuba also ran it back — and got completely opposite results. In the first game, Mexico rolled into Havana and left with a 97-76 win. trustnen led the way with 43 points, and II WHEEL II dominated the glass with 17 boards for a double-double. Cuba's irhyan2k fought hard with 29 points and 11 assists — a double-double — but it wasn't enough. Then in Game 2, Cuba flipped the script at home, winning 85-69. irhyan2k went for 15 assists again, and II WHEEL II still put up 13 points and 18 rebounds with 3 steals in the loss — a double-double effort that couldn't save Mexico from the split.
Over in the Jamaica-Japan doubleheader, Bjgwill was the story. The Jamaica big man put together a flat-out triple-double — 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists — to help Jamaica take one of the two matchups, winning 83-77 at home. Japan won the earlier game 91-71 behind NeverLeaveMee's 38 points and HeyGarn's double-double of 12 rebounds and 10 assists. But Bjgwill made sure Jamaica didn't get swept, and that triple-double line is going to turn some heads in the standings race.
In the standings, Japan bounced back from a recent loss to South Sudan and split their four games today, staying relevant in the Group A race. Jamaica is quietly on a three-game winning streak, while Cuba picks up a much-needed win after dropping three straight. Mexico and Puerto Rico both split their doubleheaders — nobody gained ground, nobody lost it. Wild Sunday in the Ultimate Hoop League.
